Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth is a Korean television series that aired every Monday and Tuesday on KBS2 from December 19, 2016, to February 21, 2017. This show was famous before the drama aired because many famous actors participated. Same as Mr. Sunshine, Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth is a drama that borrows a historical background, not a drama about a specific historical event. The historical background of this drama is Silla Kingdom(57 BC-AD 935). Most of the stories in the drama take place within the men's elite group of Silla called Hwarang.
What is Hwarang?
Hwarang is a youth training organization of the Silla period. As a youth group with a powerful collective spirit, it had educational, military, and social functions. Hwarang was established during King Jinheung when the Three Kingdoms' war occurred and worked hard until Silla achieved the unification of the three kingdoms. As a result, they produced many talents the state needed during this period. When Silla was in a state of war for over a hundred years against Goguryeo and Baekje, Hwarang contributed as a warrior.
Huarang's characteristic is that it is not only composed of aristocrats but also consists of various social classes such as the Jingol and the common people, but the group itself emphasizes loyalty and patriotism to the country. Therefore, Hwarang has partially contributed to controlling and mitigating conflicts that are likely to occur in such a social class society.
